You know I actually am not sure Cross gets the better of Larry the Cable Guy here. For instance, is David Cross really saying fart jokes are not funny, ever? I don't see him making fun of, say, South Park for doing scatological humor. So I think it must be all about social class.
I do agree that Larry the Cable Guy is racist and unfunny, and I assume he is probably anti-gay, too. He is a fine target for ridicule. But something about Cross's disdain feels a bit phony to me. I actually think disdainful and self-satisfied is David Cross's fundamental mode as a comedian, and honestly I don't find him all that much funnier than Larry the Cable Guy...
i certainly don't know enough about the feud to determine whether he gets the better of larry - but i don't follow the leap to 'all about social class.'
the criticism of larry's fart-centrism was merely that it's easy and there's nothing else there (save the latent racism, etc) to redeem it. south park doesn't fall into that category at all. i myself am a fart joke fan, to the surprise of no one.
the self-satisfied, holier-than-thou thing he falls into is taxing - the bits making fun of people in LA "trying to make it" (as he himself did), and the ones about ignorant people not being allowed to vote are just as stupid as they are unfunny.
still, all in all, david cross is pretty fucking funny. i can't say i've been able to stomach more than a few seconds of larry's bits. my family in arkansas loves the guy, and i'm sure they'd shit themselves at cross's act. it's more about the cultural divide than social class.
Okay, I see your point that class is not the only component of the cultural divide. I think that's true.
