In completely unrelated, but similarly excellent news, the Reds today announced their new pitching coach: Dick Pole.

Just keep reading the name, because it gets better and better everytime.

Dick Pole.

Just imagine the first time you're watching a game and some clever announcer remarks that "It looks like Dick Pole's headed for the mound..."

Oh how sweet it is.

I have a question for the knowledgeable:

It's looking like the good guys are back in control of both chambers, so my question is when does this new Congress convene, and is it likely that Bush's new appointee for Secretary of Defense will have to face the old Senate, or the new one?

i don't know if I would go as far as to call them the 'good guys.' Maybe the better guys, or the less painful to watch guys, or the lesser of two evil guys? Any other suggestions?

All things considered, I'll consider them the good guys. If that's a reflection on the country we live in, or my own simple brain, so be it. It feels an awful lot like the good guys won to me.

they are definetly decent guys, and much better than some of the other guys....but I also think that I have an issue with calling anyone 'good' without qualifications. And technically...they aren't all guys...but that's just me being ridiculous

Sheriff Bush and the Okay Girls!

yes! Where's a nameless country music band when you need one?

Can anybody answer my question from previously? I'm curious to know. As my esteemed colleague doomgoblin pointed out to me in an email earlier today, this Gates guy was a big time spook when spooks were at their spookiest. Who knows what kind of a step in which direction this is from Rumsfeld, but I'd like to know that the new Senate will be peering down their noses at him, and not the old one.

(Sorry to all you Senate fans for making that Chamber sound snooty. I'm down with the House. Those stodgy suits in the Senate can take long walk, if you know what I'm saying. House party!)

i think i know a band in nashville that needs a name...I'm definetly on the look out...and though I have been splitting hairs and casting stones, I, like Dan, am much happier to have this Senate watching over this Rums-replacement, than the previous senate. Overall, I'm really thrilled, i think my issues are really just with the word good. Good and I are clearly due for a long chat.

it depends on a number of things - the senate can decide to take up a hearing on a nomination at any time but it's possible for single senators to hold up the process for any reason -- if they find some dirt on him, at least some democrat would probably put a hold on the nomination vote under the guise of needing 'more time' to 'research' the dude's credentials.

both houses still have a lot of left over appropriations that they have to pass and the house will want to stuff through some more right-wing crazy-junk just because they won't get a chance to do that for at least a couple years. the senate's hard to tell. i'd bet there would be pressure to stuff him through only if there's a big fight expected over his nomination.

because the Okay Girls would have a field day with them shits.

Lame duck session shenanigans in the Ohio General Assembly and US Congress will be interesting to watch. That is for sure.

...And from our friends at The Onion.

WASHINGTON, DC—After nearly six years of much-publicized service as Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld announced his resignation Wednesday afternoon, saying that he had "proudly accomplished everything [he'd] set out to bungle." "Years ago, I decided to bog this great nation down in an extended, grueling foreign occupation, and I'm happy to say that's exactly what I've done," said Rumsfeld in a farewell address at the White House, during which he urged Americans to continue waging the ill-conceived, mismanaged, and evidently unwelcome fight for democracy in the Middle East. "Each of my actions—from undersupplying troops with body armor to focusing on capturing Saddam Hussein while Osama bin Laden remained free—has led America inexorably toward our current state of extreme crisis. Well, anyway, goodbye!" President Bush expressed confidence that Robert Gates, his new nominee for Secretary of Defense, will be able to "fuck everything up the rest of the way."
