Just read a really interesting Editorial in the Times about Pakistani business amid all this chaos.

Amillionmonkeys and I were recently discussing the continuing repercussions of the Russian invasian of Afghanistan in 1979, and the US's pursuant funding of radical Islamist groups in order to oust Soviet influence. Another instance of an American strategy getting out of control, a monster we created wreaking havoc on its master.

This is also interesting under Doomgoblin's lens (i.e. deliberate escalation-of-war-as-smokescreen for the purpose of seedy business deals, power grabs, and demonization of a people in dire straits). There is much that the US and other Western powers could do to bring about greater stability in the region (providing more economic rather than military aid), but that is not to our advantage.

As a rule, I'm wary of the free-trade arrangements spoken of in this article, but I certainly think that a collapsing economy only exascerbates an already agitated and desperate populous.
